The 13th century BC rock-cut Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel is the most impressive monument in Nubia, perfectly expressing the imperial ambition and audacity of the New Kingdom period. Four 21 m high seated figures of Ramses guard the temple facade and are among the largest sculptures inn Egypt. It seems designed to warn the Nubians of Egypt’s mighty power in addition to be the first sight a visitor can see when entering Egypt from South.
