In the early 1960s, when Egypt built the great Aswan Dam, Egyptologists and archaeologists around the world heard the call of UNESCO to save the Egyptian monuments of Nubia before the rising waters of Lake Nasser. More than sixty expeditions finally joined the “Nubian Rescue Campaign”, which resulted in the excavation and registration of hundreds of sites, the recovery of thousands of objects, as well as the recovery and reinstallation of a number of important temples to the heights.
Due to the amount of material recovered from tombs, temples and settlements, UNESCO was encouraged in the 1980s to plan a new Nubian Museum in Aswan, where objects can be stored and displayed.
Nearly 12 years later, the Museum became a reality, and opened in November 1997. The museum’s architecture and the walls of the enclosure are intended to evoke the traditional architecture of the Nubian village, as it has along the Nile before the area is flooded by Lake Nasser. Your qualified Egyptologist guide will show you some of the most important items before giving you time to explore the museum at your leisure.
The building stands in a landscape, on varying degrees, which includes a sequence of waterfalls. When the waterway reaches the lower part of the garden, it divides into two branches to surround an outdoor stage and the amphitheater where already many local and foreign groups have occurred. The remaining 43,000 square meters were used for palm plantations, flowers and climbing plants, spread over natural rocks.
Enjoy a day tour to visit the Nubian Museum, located at the southern edge of the Aswan town around the East Bank section. The Nubian Museum was opened in 1997 and the beautiful lines of its architecture alone is worth seeing. Nestled into the hillside, it covers 50,000 square metres of landscaped gardens and buildings which are divided up into different sections. Inside the museum a flight of stairs leads down from street level to the entrance of the temperature and light controlled exhibition space. The focal point is an 8m high Nubian sandstone statue of Rameses II, brought from storage after 27 years. Back to hotel.
