Pyramids of Giza

Four thousand five hundred years old, the Pyramids of Giza are the main monument of Egypt and one of the oldest in the world. Next to them is the Great Sphinx , another monumental construction whose profile is worldwide recognized. Along with the Nile cruises and Islamic Cairo , they are the most popular ride among travelers visiting Cairo.

Giant tombs

The pyramids are the monumental tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs , who were preparing to become gods in the afterlife. The gigantic temples in which they were buried are part of the ritual that would guide them to complete their destiny beyond death.

Symbol of power

The way in which the pyramids were built is still a mystery. However, it is known that in order to do so, a type of collaborative work was necessary that only a strongly organized and hierarchical society could achieve. This is why the pyramids are an important symbol of the power of the Egyptian pharaohs that served to project their image of greatness to the rest of the world.

Pyramids of Giza

Cheops

The pyramid of Cheops is the largest of all . It measures 147 meters and it is estimated that more than two million stone blocks were used to build it, each of which weighs between 2.5 and 15 tons . It was formerly covered in large blocks of limestone, but an earthquake of the early fourteenth century gave off much of its finish. Currently only the tip of the pyramid is covered.

The pharaoh Jufu, better known as Cheops, was the one who ordered the construction of the great pyramid, which was completed in about 2570 .

During the visit to the pyramid you can see the sarcophagus and the funerary boat of Cheops, which would be responsible for carrying Pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife.

Pyramids of Chefren

The Jafra pyramid, better known as Kefrén, son of Cheops, is part of a larger funerary complex that also includes a processional causeway, the Valley Temple and the Great Sphinx.

For a time it was believed to be larger than the Pyramid of Cheops, although it is now known that this was only an effect caused by the position in the terrain and the inclination of their faces.

The Great Sphinx that jealously watches the entire complex was sculpted in a mound of rock from the plateau itself. It has a height of 20 meters and in antiquity it was painted in colors.

Mykerinos

The third pyramid is of significantly smaller dimensions than the other two . It was built approximately in 2490 by the Pharaoh Mycerinus and was linked to a much more complex funerary temple. In antiquity it was lined with blocks of pink granite and limestone.

Windows to the past

Each one of the pyramids preserves in its interior decorations that show scenes of all the aspects of the daily life in the ancient Egypt. The funerary art found in the tombs shows scenes of farmers working the fields, carpenters, fishermen, and all kinds of religious rituals. The inscriptions on the tombs also shed light on the Egyptian language. Virtually all aspects of Pharaonic civilization can be studied from the elements found in the pyramids.

How to visit the pyramids
