150 years ago, Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, commissioned Giuseppe Verdi in 1869 to write an opera to be performed to celebrate the opening of Suez Canal.
The story of the Opera is based on a true story found in Papyrus and was re-written by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette.
Because of the Siege of Paris (1870-1871), during the Franco-Prussian war, when the scenery and costumes were stuck in the French capital, the premiere was delayed to be on 24 December 1871 at Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House.
Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world; at New York’s Metropolitan Opera alone, Aida has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886.
Aida Is one of the oldest true love stories in human history.
It is about the enslaved Aida, a Nubian princess that the Egyptians have captured . An Egyptian military commander, Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, the Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris is in love with Radamès, although he does not return her feelings.
